Nick Mathew & Jenny Duncalf to lead Englands Challenge in CWG Squash – 2010

World No 1 Nick Matthew leads England's challenge for Commonwealth Games

Matthew became the second Englishman to top the world squash rankings last month – after Lee Beachill in 2004 – following victories in a string of major tournaments including the British Open, Canary Wharf Classic, Qatar Open and the Sky Open. Matthew, 29, makes his second appearance at a Commonwealth Games after just missing out on the medals in Melbourne four years ago, when he lost the men’s singles bronze medal match to another Englishman, Lee Beachill.

Four years on, however, Matthew will be favourite to add to his growing title cabinet. David Palmer, the Australian stalwart, is likely to provide a strong challenge, given that this will be his last Games. The Yorkshireman said: “I’m going there to win gold. Coming fourth last time was very disappointing. It hurt a lot – it’s the worst position you can finish. I’m going to use that experience to spur me on in Delhi.”

Matthew won’t be England’s only threat for gold as three members of the men’s team also feature in the world’s top 10, with former world No 2 James Willstrop currently ranked sixth, Peter Barker eighth and Daryl Selby ninth.

Duncalf is one of three England players in the world top 10 women’s rankings. She is currently second behind Malaysia’s Nicol David.

It is still not known whether David Pearson, England’s highly-influential national coach, will travel to Delhi. Pearson’s future – he has been at the helm for 15 years – has currently stalled after months of talks with England Squash over procedural changes to his role……as reporated by The Daily Telegraph
